Children’s Civic Engagement in the Scratch Online Community - an analysis by Ricarose Roque, Sayamindu Dasgupta, and Sasha Costanza-Chock, of civic engagement in the Scratch online community, exploring the many ways that Scratchers connect with current issues, locally, globally, and within the Scratch Online Community.

We especially wanted to highlight their recommendations for educators and designers (Section 5):

  1. Connect to Where the Learners Are and What They Are Already Doing

  2. Facilitate Rather than Dictate

  3. Encourage a Sense of Ownership over the Community

  4. Support Channels for Dutiful Citizenship

Ricarose et al also also the following three quesitons in their research, which we think are great questions to consider as we continue the conversation:
  • How do children engage in civic discourse and expression with their peers within the Scratch Online Community?
  • How do such expressions affect this community?
  • What lessons can we distill for educators and designers who want to encourage children to engage in civic life, rather than dissuade them?

Hi! I came across a publication from Ricarose and company and its really interesting. I did an experience with teachers, working with projects based on social and comunitarian issues. They didn´t have experience working with Scratch, so ideas came easy but programming was not so simple. Anyway, I think this is a great way to work by projects, and look forward to see more experiences in this field.
