Textbook for Upper Elementary / Middle school/ Highschool

Looking for teachers willing to test out my textbook with their students - I am willing to send a copy those who are interested

After looking around for a suitable text book to help teach kids about scratch and not finding what I was looking for, I decided to create one myself. The text is bright and colourful and teaches not only how to program with scratch, but also introduces computer terminology and the history of computers to students. It is perfect for Upper Elementary, but I have also used it to introduce programming to my Grade 11 Computer Programming students. They love the instant gratification that programming with Scratch gives them. If you are interested in purchasing a copy (the black and white copy sells for less than $20) you can buy them at www.lulu.com/tannis , or send me a message and I will email you a pdf for free if you promise to give me a little feedback. *** March 2011 update*** Thankyou for your suggestions, I am no no longer offering free PDF copies. The text is now available to purchase.

The new text is now available! Aimed at a younger audience (ages 8 - 14), but still sophisticated enough to use as an introductory course at the high school level - perfect for middle school computer programming courses.  Head to www.lulu.com/tannis  to order - they are on sale now!

Hard cover, ebook, soft cover, full colour or black and white - you choose the format! The text is available for immediate download as as an eBook or PDF.

Hi, Tannis,

I just heard about your book at the Scratch Educator meetup on Saturday. If you are still offering the pdf for review, I would love to get a copy to look through and give you feedback. We have just started an afterschool program for 4th-6th graders, for which I just finished doing six weeks of professional development with the teachers. Since this is a pilot project, we are still working on ideas and materials, so I can't help but think your book would be a valuable resource.

Thanks very much! Look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,

Sandra

I would love a pdf copy of your book if you are still offering it.  I've been doing web design lessons with our homeschool group and they are now asking for programming lessons.  They've all downloaded and played with scratch but I need some guidance to actually get them understanding the concepts and programming.  I can be reached at discovery4life(at)ymail(dot)com.

I am a new Scratch member. I am in the process of creating a program that will be an after school program. My students are in the 5th and 6th grade.

Was wondering how the evaluation of your textbook is going and if there are some resources I could try out in my class.

There is so much on this Web site and I need to adopt one resource soon and get to work over the holiday break.

A pdf version will work for me.

Hi Tannis,

I too would love a pdf of your Scratch book. I teach Technology to 4th-8th graders in Seattle, WA. This is my first year teaching Scratch so all resources are welcome.  I would be glad to give you feedback on the book as well. It seems as you said, there is not a lot out there for this.  I own the two books currently on the market: Scratch 1.4 and the book for teens.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers!

 Hi, Tannis,

Our nonprofit here is teaching an after school program for grades 4-8, using Scratch.  My background is that I graduated from MIT (Ph.D. '79) with a specialization in AI and LOGO type stuff, so I feel a close kinship to the intellectual tradition of Mitch and the Lifelong Kindergarten folks.  I would very much like to see how well your book would apply to our 15 hour program, and I would be pleased to share feedback.

I will look forward to hearing from you!
