Tenafly Middle School

Brief biography:
I have taught English language arts for fourteen years to students in grades five through twelve in several districts in Bergen County, New Jersey. I currently teach sixth grade at Tenafly Middle School. My experience has been that students of all ages are capable of astounding achievements when they are afforded the freedom to choose how to demonstrate their learning and given caring, diligent teachers. I continually seek ways to differentiate instruction and use the technology that students embrace to help them learn. I've also learned that, while students are masters of the many new tech tools for entertainment and peer communication, they need teachers to help them use those tools for their intellectual growth. As co-advisor to Tenafly Middle School's Citizens of the World Club, I work with colleagues to foster global awareness and citizenship in our students, utilizing technology to connect, learn, and collaborate with teachers and students around the world and take action on global citizenship issues. In 2013 we helped to build an urgently needed dormitory for a school in Uganda and helped a school in Ghana to stay connected via the Internet. I also work with principal Eric Sheninger of New Milford High School in the development and refinement of the Independent Open Courseware Study program.
