Getting Started with Scratch

This is a presentation I have used to introduce the user interface and basic skills to 4th graders and above.

Use this presentation to teach the basics of programming in Scratch. Students will learn the following discrete skills:

  • Sequential thought - how to lay out commands in a logical order for the computer to execute.

  • Loops - how to create efficient code by automating simple commands.

  • Conditionals - if-then statements

  • Events - user generated events like clicking the mouse or hitting the arrow keys that tell the computer to do something.

  • Broadcasting - sending messages between sprites in a game that trigger actions like changing levels or winning/ending a game.
