Introduction to Programming

A set of 7 scratch lessons to introduce 8 year old children to programming concepts in class.

These 7 lessons were developed as part of my honours project which looked at teaching 8 year olds about computer programming concepts, while being based around the school curriculum.   In Scotland the Curriculum for Excellence is now in place and these lessons aim to cover some of the expereinces and outcomes of this.

The following files are added for help:-

Scratch_additional_reva:- gives overview of all the lessons and outcomes which they are trying to achieve

Scracth_workbook_reva:- the 8 lessons for children to work through.

Scratch_teachers_workbook:- same as above with some answers filled in

I have also created the Scratch files to go along with most of the lessons. (names of scratch files = lesson names)

Additionally I originally evaluated these lessons for enjoyment by getting the children to circle a picture to show their feelings about the lesson.  If anyone would like these please let me know( it would be good to see if others get the same results).

If you need any help at all with any of the above please get in touch with me I will only be too happy to help you awilson169 {at] gmail [dot] com

Hi Amanda, Thank you so very much for sharing all of this information and your seminar was fantastic!

You did a wonderful job. The documentations and notes on How to for use "newbies" that are holding our first Scratch Day is allowing me to fell comfortable enough to try this. You did a wonderful job and everything was so clear and easy to understand. Thank you so very much for all your hard work and efforts.

Thanks, I have uploaded another version of the workbook (Scratch_workbook) this one has at the end of each lesson a picture with 3 faces one sad one ok and one happy face.  At the end of each lesson I had the children circle/mark/colour the picture which showed how they felt about using scratch that day.

Lesson 8 thanks mentioning this I should change and add more information.  the idea behind it is that I give the chidlren two tries, the first time simply to get the cat from a to b then the second time to get the cat from a to b using the exact instructions given.   I hope that helps you.

Thanks for clarifying Lesson 8 and posting the workshop version with evaluation. Did you get a lot of happy Maggie faces? :)

Your welcome, yes over 8 weeks I saw lots of happy faces - average of about 4 each week from 47 children(2 classes) who thought it was ok and only once did i ever get a sad face (the pupil  wasnt feeling well that day though and I think thats why the sad face for that lesson) :)

Hi Amanda, Thank you for sharing this! I would be interested in seeing the children's evaluations. Is there a file you can upload here? Also, I was curious how Lesson 8: Revision Lesson/Test worked out with the two pathways. Were different students given different pathways and if so, what were the reactions?
