Code Yourself! A free online course on Coursera

A free online course that aims to teach young teenagers how to program using Scratch.
The University of Edinburgh and the ORT University in Uruguay are pleased to announce Code Yourself! An Introduction to Programming, a free online course that aims to teach young teenagers how to program. Code Yourself will be launched on Coursera on the 9th of March 2015, and it has a duration of 5 weeks. A Spanish-speaking version of this course, ¡A Programar! Una introducción a la programación, will also be launched on the same date.

Who is this course for?
This course is for beginners in programming. It is perfect for ages around 13-15, but people of other ages should also find the course worthwhile. Teachers are welcome to attend the course and reuse some the materials in their own teaching.

What programming language is used?
Code Yourself uses Scratch.

What will students achieve by the end of this course?
This course will allow students to:
  • Understand and apply fundamental principles and concepts of computer science.
  • Analyse problems in computational terms.
  • Understand and follow basic software engineering practices.
  • Design, create, debug, reuse and re-purpose computer programs in Scratch.
What it the course format?
The course consists of short videos supported by slides and code examples, interviews with computing experts, fun quizzes and creative projects.
